On January 19, 2021, Tee Elder was standing in her kitchen as it was a regular day when she read the life changing words via “MyChart”; Stage 0 Ductal Carcinoma in Situ and Stage 1 Invasive Ductal Carcinoma (which later changed). Tee was 33 years young and a mother of four whose world instantly went into a spiral. Long a survivor of many other obstacles life threw her way, Tee mustered up every ounce of energy she had to fight the battle ahead. The terrain was and is still rough as there was no master class to prepare her for the fear, anger, grief, questions, and rapid-fire transitions to her body or her mental health. The arduous realization was that surviving treatment did not mean there would be a return to who she was prior to cancer. Life was split in two as cancer changed her entire ecosystem.
Leaving no stone unturned, cancer changed the way she saw her body, her future, her relationships and ethe meaning of the word survivor. Cancer forced Tee to confront parts of herself she was not ready to face and taught her quickly, there is an entire world beyond the diagnosis and beyond the bell that does not get talked about.
This book is not a story about having all the answers. It is about telling the truth. Her truth and the truths of a few other survivors, thrivers, and warriors. This book illuminates the moments no one prepared her for. This book highlights moments where the warrior is still entangled in the web of emotion, exhausted with being strong, all while people are celebrating and telling her she is doing well, meanwhile the survivor is scrambling to pick up what feels like fragmented pieces of her life.
Through her own experience and the stories of other cancer thrivers and survivors, this book explores what it means to face a diagnosis, navigate the aftermath, redefine yourself, and discover that survivorship is not a single destination, it is an ongoing journey. This is a story about cancer, kind of. It is a story about life, identity, grief, uncertainty, resilience, and finding your way forward laced with vulnerability and transparency. Tee learned surviving cancer is in no way, shape, or form, about going back to the woman you were before. She no longer exists. Surviving cancer is rediscovering yourself, meeting, and making room for the woman you become after. ♥
